Sustainable agriculture

Laureal Foundation Sustainable agriculture Program

What about Sustainable agriculture?

Agriculture is head and shoulders above all other economic sector in Africa with its impact on the continent’s economies. Agriculture provides massive revenue for countries in Africa by contributing a substantial 20-50% of their Gross Domestic Product (GDP). In fact, according to statistics agriculture accounted for a remarkable 42.5% of the continent’s working population in 2022, employing millions of people across different African countries. Also, there is inflation in agricultural products and it is mostly in low and middle-income countries. The World Bank reported that as of July 1, 2024 59.1% are experiencing food price inflation higher than 5%. These points out the pivotal role agriculture play to sustain livelihoods and generate income for the people.

With the high rate of unemployment in Africa, and looking at how untapped the agricultural sector is; it is obvious that way more can be done to help develop the sector. The growth of agriculture is on a slow pace in Africa, most African countries have failed to meet the requirements for a successful agriculture revolution. Productivity in the sector lags behind compared to the rest of the world. Many are seeking white-collar jobs in industries with limited jobs whereas agriculture can provide massive employment if properly invested in. Also, agriculture can play significant roles in helping to reduce poverty and also aid economic development in Africa

At the Laureal Foundation we have been helping to reduce poverty by providing employment through agriculture and contribute to food security. The Foundation has been able to provide employment for over 50 people across Cameroon, Ghana and Nigeria to work on our farms and earn a living. We have rolled out various agricultural programs: farm loan program (assisting famers financially for expansion and to purchase necessary equipment), conservative programs (to encourage sustainable farming like soil conservation to avoid erosion) and animal husbandry (poultry, planning on breeding other livestock before the year runs out) and chemical free farming (using natural farming methods devoid of synthetic chemicals to grow various farm products)

With the rapid surge in Africa’s population, it is paramount that food production increases significantly to meet the rising demand. This makes it necessary to boost agricultural productivity to ensure food security. The aforementioned needs, in line with the arable lands in these West African countries , and especially in Nigeria has prompted us to want to invest massively in agriculture to meet demands to help create an avenue to alleviate poverty. Together we can harness the agricultural potential of these countries, drive economic growth and improve people’s lives. Join the Laureal Foundation to transform agriculture in these countries and improve lives.
